Mason County, Texas
During 1873, an African girl named Emmak, about eleven years old, was in a tree about seventy-five yards from the Jno. Gammel ranch house, which was about fifteen miles southwest of Mason. The girl either fell, jumped or was knocked out of the tree and when she hit the ground started toward the house but was shot by an Indian with a large caliber rifle. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wartenbach were living at the ranch at the time, but Mr. Wartenbach was away.
Note: Author interviewed Charles Wartenbach, himself.
The above story is from the book, The West Texas Frontier, by Joseph Carroll McConnell.
