If you'd like to take a historically significant short cut back to the Metroplex, you can follow Hwy. 4S from Graford into Palo Pinto. This short trip will take you across the Brazos at Rochelle's Landing, outfitters for river trips. In the distance beyond the river bank to the northeast is approximately where Choctaw Tom's band was massacred. The event is generally credited as marking the beginning of the end of the reservation system in Texas.
There is a historical marker to George Webb Slaughter on the east side of Hwy. 4 as it begins to climb out of Dark Valley.
